BBI Seed Grant winners announced

The University of Maryland’s Brain and Behavior Initiative has announced its 2015 Seed Grant awardees.

Five projects were funded out of 13 seed grant proposals received. Teams collaborated widely across campus; 50 investigators representing 25 disciplines participated.

Funded projects

Samira Anderson (Hearing and Speech, BSOS, NACS), Matthew Goupell (Hearing and Speech, BSOS, NACS), and Katrina MacLeod (Biology, CMNS, NACS): Understanding the effect of age and duration of deafness on speech recognition in Cochlear Implant users

Philip DeShong (Chemistry & Biochemistry, CMNS), Erica Glasper (Psychology, BSOS, NACS), Jens Herberholz (Psychology, BSOS, NACS), and Farrah Madison (Psychology, BSOS): A novel use of catanioinic vesicles to modulate nervous system function and behavior

Patrick Kanold (Biology, CMNS, ISR, NACS, and ENGR), Ramani Duraiswami (Computer Science, CMNS), Nail Gumerov (UMIACS, CMNS), and Wolfgang Losert (Physics, CMNS and IREAP) Development of an ultra-fast 2 photon microscope by beam multiplexing: GRID Imaging

Joshua Singer (Biology, CMNS, NACS), Bongtae Han (Mechanical Engineering, ENGR), and Elizabeth Quinlan (Biology, CMNS, NACS) The retina as a novel biomarker for schizophrenia

Edo Waks (Electrical and Computer Engineering and IREAP, ENGR and CMNS), Benjamin Shapiro (Bioengineering and ISR, ENGR), Ricardo Araneda (Biology, CMNS, NACS), and Jens Herberholz (Psychology, BSOS, NACS): Wireless Measurement of Neuronal Currents Using Spin-Torque Nano-Oscillators
