Chellappa Named Inaugural Recipient of IEEE Biometrics Council Leadership Award


Rama Chellappa, Distinguished University Professor and chair of electrical and computer engineering with an appointment in UMIACS, was recognized as the inaugural recipient of the IEEE Biometrics Council Leadership Award on Sept. 6 in Buffalo, New York, at the IEEE Eighth International Conference on Biometrics: Theory, Applications, and Systems (BTAS 2016).

The award honors exceptional leadership from IEEE members involved in biometrics, which is the measurement and statistical analysis of people’s physical and behavioral characteristics. This includes voice, fingerprint, iris, face, handwriting, gait and other modalities, as well as multi-modal biometrics and new biometrics based on novel sensing technologies.

Chellappa specializes in signal and image processing, computer vision, pattern recognition, multi-dimension stochastic processes, statistical interference, image analysis, robust and secure biometrics, and artificial intelligence in computer vision.

He has served as an associate editor of four IEEE Transactions, as a co-Editor-in-Chief of Graphical Models and Image Processing and as the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. He also served as a member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Board of Governors, as a Distinguished Lecturer, and as its Vice President of Awards and Membership.
