Understanding the effect of age and duration of deafness on speech recognition in Cochlear Implant users

  • Samira Anderson, Matthew Goupell, Katrina MacLeod

Cochlear implants (CI) do not work equally well for all individuals; in order them to be maximally effective, they should account for the patient’s age and hearing history. This project develops an individualized approach to link the electrodes of a CI interface with the surviving neurons of the auditory nerve.

A Multimodal Sensor Discovery Platform to Study the Molecular Events Underlying the Gut-Microbiome-Brain Axis

  • Reza Ghodssi, William Bentley, Jens Herberholz

This project engineers an interdisciplinary discovery platform to study gut microbiome-triggered cellular and molecular signaling up close at the native time scales needed to fully understand the underlying mechanisms.

The impact of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation on therapy outcomes in aphasia

This project proposes noninvasive transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation as one method of treating post-stroke aphasia, a disorder typically marked by loss of language and difficulty word finding.

Time-Release Capsules for Neurotransmitter Delivery to the Brain of Behaving Birds

In order to understand the non-genomic, rapid effects of steroid hormones for motivation in birdsong, this project develops time-release capsules to take behavioral measurements at the time of testostorone release in normally-behaving canaries.
